Ikimetsän naiset - Women of the Old-Growth Forest

2024-ongoing

Women of the Old-Growth Forest is a documentary project that highlights the significance of the Kivinokka summer cottage area as part of urban residents' connection to nature and identity. Combining photography, interviews, and archival research, the work explores Helsinki's Kivinokka, where historic summer cottages and lush nature meet the expanding city. Kivinokka is a historic area where people and nature have coexisted for decades. It symbolizes a traditional way to escape the urban bustle and experience peace and connection with nature.

Plans to revise the zoning regulations threaten Kivinokka’s traditional landscape, potentially leading to irreversible changes and the loss of a piece of historical cultural heritage. My project documents the unique features of the Kivinokka area, focusing on the relationship between its residents and nature, with particular attention to the role of working-class women in preserving the traditions of the place.
